Back in April, we commented on what a good idea it is to combine an online marketing campaign with an offline activity. A perfect example of this is the new campaign from the people at Flickr.

Faceball, billed as a “A fun-for-all-the-family game of projectile-based violence”, is a game involving the throwing of beach balls at the face of your opponent. The game itself is neither particularly original or complicated but it is very clever. For one, the balls are available in Flickr ident colours, pink and blue. There was much fanfare about the launch, and this caused a ripple of excitement throughout the blogosphere. There is an official faceball website, containing video guides, rules of play and the inevitable disclaimer (delivered with humour and charm). Players are encouraged to form leagues, hold tournaments and share their correctly tagged pictures and videos on Flickr and Vimeo.

This is a great example of what can be achieved with existing web 2.0 tools, a bit of imagination and – in this case – a couple of brightly coloured beach balls.
