Yesterday, 15 April, I attended the Blogging and New Media session given by Scott Bourne President of Podango.com.

Scott is Lee Gibbons partner who I mentioned in the previous NAB blog.

Bill Daring with Scott Bourne of Podango.com after the NAB Blogging and New Media seminar

Much of what Scott had to say was Blogging 101, but nevertheless gave us some useful tips particularly about monetarising the blog and the relationship between his blog and promoting his site or next podcast . He cited a number of websites that could provide useful information on blogging including podcastingtricks.com, bloggingtricks.com, kdpaine.blogs.com

Scott talked about “blogging content” being “Google juice” (the first time I’ve heard that expression) and that once the content is out on the net it is able to direct traffic to your site and get brand exposure for your company or your sponsor.

At the end of his session one of Scotts colleagues Lianna demonstrated setting up a Wordpress blog and discussed the social networks aspects of distribution and video upload. She felt that if you hosted your video on Youtube the quality was not so hot, but the video would get exposure and reach. For a quality delivery of your video then vimeo.com was a better choice.

If you needed to upload a number of videos at the same time Lianna suggested that Tubemogul.com was a good solution.

What if we weren’t really recording a new “Meet the Team” feature, and instead I was being set up in some form of welcoming the newbie into the team joke?! However, I arrived at reception to see a very confused looking receptionist, who couldn’t quite understand why one member of KMP staff had just cycled inside on his mountain bike! Phew, that sounded about right!
The brief for the feature was to record a short film including most members of the KMP team. However, rather than film the staff in their everyday work clothes, and create a more serious film, it was decided that staff would dress to their best comedic ability in their most favoured sporting attire. This varied throughout the team and we had a wide range of sporting disciplines from a sailor, to a person on a pogo-stick, to a hockey player complete with cuts and bruises. What a sporty lot we all are!
The filming took place in the board room, and throughout the day KMP staff nervously awaiting their call up. From the office, I watched different members of the team disappear off and get changed into their sports gear. Everyone was excited to learn what everyone’s outfits looked like, and how their film shoot had gone.
The eventual outcome of the day’s work should turn into a short film made up of 6 second clips of each member of the team carrying out various different sporting actions in a humorous and comedic fashion. We wanted to show that marketing can be creative and fun, and doesn’t have to be taken too seriously. In fact, we’re all a bit mad!

How will “User Generated Content” change our lives in 2007.

In 2006 we saw Terry Tate the office linebacker drama unfold and lead the way in quality virals on YouTube. I expect to see more commercial use of the YouTube and other internet video channels to distribute virals.

And this week we all witnessed a moment in history, a public state execution. Major news outlets faced an ethical dilemma created by the Saddam Hussein execution video , i.e., whether or not to to televise an execution from what appeared to be cell phone video from the scene. The video has since spread like wildfire through the Internet. For many viewers the horror of watching a state execution on the web masked the historic moment of UGC scooping the traditional media. This will change the way the news is delivered in future.

So how will you use the growiing UGC bandwagon this year to get your message across?

We had a request last week from a leading advertising agency to help them to create an email campaign using an embedded video file.

We were told that their original supplier had let them down and we were asked to serve out a streaming video file to an email client. We decided to:

create a flash movie and stream it to the email client

back this up with a link (animated gif) to a web page for those e-mail clients that wouldn’t be able to see the video.

We were told that there were ways to sniff out whether an email client could play the embedded video. Can anyone help us with this and are there any better ways of achieving the required end result?
