SEM

Pay per Click (PPC) advertising or “paid search” is a development of search engine marketing whereby an advertiser pays the search engine for a level of prominence that would otherwise not be achieved from natural search rankings alone. PPC is typically used to supplement an advertiser’s “natural search” rankings in the following areas: To gain a higher or “page 1″ level of visibility on businesses’ main keywords (where, for example, their natural search placing might be several pages into the search results).

The ROI on SEM is often lower than that of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) due to the need to pay for keyword advertising on top of the cost of managing the campaign. The upside is that the increase in traffic generated by SEM will be much quicker than by using SEO and can be highly targeted - creating valuable leads with a high chance of conversion.

Search engines like Google and Yahoo are being used more than ever to help users find what they are looking for. 

The challenge of SEO lies with the ability to tap into the minds of your audience and find out what keywords or phrases are used to find you. Even if you manage to do this, there is then the challenge of securing the top ranking for the particular keyword.

In February 2009 it was reported by Comscore that there were 13.5bn searches in the US alone (up from 6.5bn searches in January 2008). According to estimates this is only 10% of a world total of 135bn searches per month.
